In 1888, A mechanic from Bristol, CN named Everett Horton patented a fishing rod of telescoping steel tubes. The rod was lightweight and compact making it easy to hike through the woods to fishing spots without getting one’s line caught in the trees. In Bristol, The Horton Manufacture Company formed producing a complete line of these steel fishing rods for use from fly to deep sea fishing. The steel fishing rod in this listing elements and markings fit the time period of late 19th/early 20th century manufacturing production for their products. Three Items within this listing; antique telescoping steel casting fishing rod (disassembled into two parts) Custom made cloth sheath for rod in two part W.W.Grigg product line travel case Antique telescoping steel casting fishing rod: disassembled into two parts, 1. Handle 2. Telescoping rod body. Handle: within the metal (appears to be stainless steel) reel seat is etched text reads, “LUCKIE, THE HORTON MFG.CO. BRISTOL CONN.” Between reel seat and metal tip is a cork hand grip, which originally has a black finish coated that has slowly worn with use. Reel seat has a sliding fiction lock brushing of metal (appears to be stainless steel). Tapper throat is screwed to main handle and has a custom sized opening to receive brass tip of telescoping rod body. Length: 10 3/4” Telescoping rod body: when is clasped, the body length is 28 1/2”. When extended, the maximum body length in 97 3/4”. An approx 2in long brass hilt fits into handle. From this brass hilt, a 22 inch long steel tube extends up to three guides and the rod tip guide. The guide appear to be twisted stainless steel mounted to the main steel tube body by brass sleeves. The moving steel parts have been clean and lubricated for maintenance & smooth action to extend the body. The exposed exterior steel and brass have been cleaned and provided with a clear coat finish to reduce any atmospheric corrosion. Cloth sheath: two individual compartment cloth sheath fits the disassembled steel rod within this listing. Top of sheath has blue tab to hold rod at zipper top of provided case. Both sheath and case are provided to reduce metal corrosion. Travel case: this WWGrigg product has a green synthetic cloth cover with black synthetic strap handle and a zipper closure cap. Cap has padded interior and is permanently attached to main case body. Interior of case is a plastic tube 31” in length with a 2” diameter opening. Padding in cap is removable for an additional 1” of length inside the case.
