Radio telescopes (Cheshire, England) - The world's largest radio telescope, encased in its spider-like construction of girders, nears completion at Cheshire, England. Shaped like a huge searchlight, the steel bowl is 250 feet in diameter, 62 feet 6 inches in depth at the center. This bowl is the main mirror and at completion will weight 600 tons. The nerve center of the telescope, which can be rotated in any direction towards ground and sky, is a radio aerial capable of receiving radar waves of wavelengths between 10 centimeters and 30 meters. The new radio telescope will be the largest single instrument ever made for scientific research and will cost an estimated 500,000 pounds.
